LSC Commissions

The London Symphony Chorus was formed in 1966 to complement the work of the London Symphony Orchestra. The partnership between the LSC and LSO was developed and strengthened in 2012 with the appointment of Simon Halsey as Chorus Director of the LSC and Choral Director for the LSO.

The chorus has recorded widely for LSO Live, with the partnership resulting in several award winning releases: including two Grammy Awards – Berlioz Les Troyens in 2000 and Verdi Falstaff in 2004 – and a BBC Music Magazine award for Sibelius Kullervo, all under the baton of the late Sir Colin Davis.

The chorus has also commissioned new works from composers such as Sir John Tavener, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and Jonathan Dove, and took part in the world premiere of James MacMillan’s St John Passion with the LSO and Sir Colin Davis in 2008, and in the second London performance in February 2010.
