As part of the centenary celebrations for Leonard Bernstein and on what would have been his 100th birthday, the Proms are presenting a weekend of his work, including the musical “On The Town” in which John Wilson will be conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. The cast includes Nathaniel Hackmann as Gabey and Louise Dearman as Hildy. It will be directed by Martin Duncan.
This Bernstein musical, with book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green was an instant hit when it was first produced in 1944 and contains several popular and classic songs, including “New York, New York”, “Lonely Town” and “I Can Cook, Too” (for which Bernstein also wrote the lyrics).
Several members of the London Symphony Chorus will be part of the vocal ensemble making up the company for this celebratory performance.
