It is a particular joy for the LSC to be joining forces with the LSO under Bernard Haitink for this evening of Bruckner. Haitink is widely considered to be one of the world’s leading interpreters of the composer.
The “Te Deum” is dedicated “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (to the greater glory of God”), and is an affirmation of Bruckner’s commitment to his Christian faith. The four soloists are: Sally Matthews (soprano), Karen Cargill (mezzo-soprano), Eric Cutler (tenor), Frank-Josef Selig (bass).
Some commentators have detected a link between Bruckner’s 9th Symphony, which he thought he might not live to complete, and the “Te Deum”, while others feel that the link to the “Te Deum” was simply a matter of self-quotation more than anything else. Whatever opinion one holds, there can be doubt that this will be an unforgettable evening.
