Welcome to The London Symphony Chorus

The advent of Simon Rattle as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra at the beginning of the 2017-18 season, heralded a year of concerts with the world’s most celebrated conductors, culminating in Beethoven “Missa Solemnis”, widely regarded as the composer’s most challenging piece. This finale to the 2017-18 choral year with the LSO is conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, Vice-President of the LSC, a fitting climax to a challenging and very exciting year of singing.

Under the leadership of Simon Halsey, the London Symphony Chorus has, in recent years, grown from strength to strength. His appointment as LSC Chorus Director and Choral Director of the LSO reflects the importance the Orchestra places on choral activity. Indeed, the close relationship between LSO and LSC is demonstrated in the programme of work that the 2018-19 season contains.

We begin with a new commission by James MacMillan, “All the Hills and Vales Along”, which will be conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. The LSC premiered and recorded MacMillan’s “St. Luke Passion” with Colin Davis to great acclaim. This is followed by a concert of fascinating contrasts, Bartok “Cantata Profana” coupled with Haydn “Nelson Mass” conducted by Francois-Xavier Roth. We then welcome the return of Marin Alsop to conduct Bernstein “Candide” and Simon Rattle will conduct Szymanowksi “Harnasie”.

At the beginning of the 2019 calendar year, the first pair of concerts are performances of Mahler “Symphony No. 8” in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Philharmonic, conducted by Marc Albrecht. This is followed by a return to the Barbican for Puccini “Messa di Gloria” conducted by Antonio Pappano, with whom the Chorus has previously recorded this work.

Our own Chorus Director, Simon Halsey, will be responsible for David Lang “Public Domain” an LSO Sing Project. We then have a pair of Ives symphonies: “Symphony No. 4” conducted by Mark Elder and “Holidays Symphony” conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The season ends with Janacek, “The Cunning Little Vixen” conducted by Simon Rattle with stage direction by Peter Sellars. This Barbican performance will be repeated in Paris.
