Chorus Master, Simon Halsey, receives The Queen's Medal
Welcome To The London Symphony Chorus – London’s Choir of First Choice
The London Symphony Chorus is widely regarded as London’s choir of first choice under Simon Halsey’s leadership. Our continuing close partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra has also been strengthened by his appointment both as LSC Chorus Director and Choral Director of the LSO, reflecting the importance the Orchestra places on future choral activity.
Since his appointment, notable highlights include performances and recordings of Rachmaninov’s Vespers under Simon's baton, Peter Maxwell Davies’s Symphony No.10 under Antonio Pappano and Schumann’s oratorio Das Paradies und Die Peri under the LSO’s principal conductor-elect Simon Rattle.
We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2016 with an exciting programme which included an eclectic mix of both popular and new choral compositions. We performed Haydn’s The Seasons under Simon Rattle, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius under Mark Elder and Schumann’s Faust Szenen under Daniel Harding, all with the LSO. Simon Rattle returned to the podium in June with the premiere performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’s new opera, The Hogboon. In September 2016, the choir performed Verdi’s Requiem in London with the LSO under Gianandrea Noseda with a repeat performance in the Lincoln Centre, New York at the the end of October.
Our 2016-17 season with the LSO includes El Nino by John Adams conducted by the composer and Bruckner’s Te Deum conducted by Bernard Haitink. Also, following on from the success of Debussy’s Pelleas et Mellisande last season, we performed Ligeti’s opera Le Grand Macabre in January 2017 , conducted by Simon Rattle and semi-staged by Peter Sellars.
